Chelsea Poe Re-Releases 'Queer Porn Americana'

SAN FRANCISCO—Director and performer Chelsea Poe has re-released Queer Porn Americana under her eponymous Chelsea Poe Productions label. The movie is the first directed by Poe and “the project that became her earliest calling card as a touring artist, screening in community spaces across the U.S. and abroad,” a description reads. “First imagined by co-producers Chelsea Poe and Ella Bryn on the west side of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Queer Porn Americana began as a fiercely personal idea rooted in hometown textures, queer survival and DIY intimacy. From there, it grew into a grassroots screening phenomenon: Tokyo, Helsinki, Berlin Brooklyn, Providence, London, Seattle, Vancouver, Olympia and Chicago,” the description continues. “Queer Porn Americana was the first time I realized directing porn could be more than a shoot day, it could have a second life touring,” Poe said. “It was me learning, in real time, how to make work that feels like home, then carrying it from city to city like a band has a nightly setlist.” Poe said she approached screenings as part of the artwork itself, “each showing a site-specific moment defined by the room, the audience, and the conversation after. “The re-release marks a new chapter for a foundational title bringing Poe’s first directed work back into circulation with renewed intention: preservation, authorship, and a clear archival home for the film that started it all,” the description adds.
