RedGIFs Joins StopNCII.org to Help Prevent Sharing of Non-Consensual Intimate Images

Shortform adult content platform RedGIFs has announced it has joined StopNCII.org, a global initiative to prevent the sharing of non-consensual intimate images online.

In the announcement, RedGIFs noted that in signing on with the effort, “RedGIFs joins current StopNCII.org industry partners Facebook, Instagram, Reddit and many others in the fight against intimate image abuse.”

“Since 2021, StopNCII.org has helped over 300,000 people create cases in the prevention of intimate images and videos from being shared online without consent,” RedGIFs noted in their statement. “StopNCII.org uses world-first, on-device hashing technology that allows those being threatened with intimate image abuse the ability to create digital fingerprints of their images, (also known as ‘hashes’). Only hashes are shared with participating platforms, ensuring that the original images (or videos) never leave the user’s device. To protect the user’s privacy, hashes are presented as a string of numbers and letters which cannot be reverse engineered back to the original image (or video).”

According to a description of the technology published by StopNCII.org, the organization shares the hash values (and not the images themselves) with “participating companies so they can help detect and remove the images from being shared online.”

StopNCII.org is operated by the Revenge Porn Helpline (“RPH”), which itself is part of SWGfL, “a charity with an international reputation that believes that everyone should benefit from technology, free from harm.”

According to STOPNCII.org, RPH, which was established in 2015, “has supported thousands of victims of non-consensual intimate image abuse.”

“With an over 90% removal rate, RPH has successfully removed over 200,000 individual non-consensual intimate images from the internet,” STOPNCII.org reports.

Last year, when imgur announced a change in their terms of service that effectively banned posting sexually explicit images, RedGIFs stepped up to “reaffirm their commitment to NSFW communities.”

“Adult is too often seen as a convenient money grab; valuable but hidden in the shadows and waiting to be ousted as soon as future business plans deem it inconvenient,” RedGIFs said in a statement at the time. “We’d therefore like to make it abundantly clear; RedGIFs is solely committed to serving NSFW content and the adult industry. There are no ulterior motives and no future pivot plans beyond that.”
