As the host of Adult Site Broker Talk, I’ve learned a lot over the last two years of doing the show.
In fact, many of the things I’ve learned are reminders from way back in the dark ages when I was a radio sports reporter, covering Major League Baseball, NFL Football, NBA Basketball, and numerous other sports.
There is most certainly an art to the interview. But there’s also an art to being a guest.
Back when I was growing up there was no such thing as podcasts. Hell, there was no such thing as the internet (imagine that gen z’ers – the horror!).
There was just radio and unless you were on the radio you didn’t know anything at all about interviewing or being interviewed.
But now with the advent of the podcast, anyone can be a show host. Even me! And more importantly, anyone can be a guest.
I’m going to guess that of the people reading this article a decent percentage of you either have a podcast, have been interviewed on a podcast or both. At the very least you probably listen to podcasts. According to Buzzsprout, in 2022, 73% of the U.S. population 12+ have listened to online audio in the last month. Over one-third (104 million) of Americans listen to podcasts regularly.
In the adult industry we have many fine podcasts and I hope you include Adult Site Broker Talk among them.
So here are some tips for being a great guest on a podcast:
- Give open ended answers to questions. Nothing is worse for a host than to ask a question and get a two- or three-word answer or even an answer of one sentence.
- Try to eliminate filler phrases such as “uh” and “you know”. I try to edit as many of those out as possible. Hell, I sometimes fall into the habit myself. Especially if a guest is dropping a bunch of them. It’s contagious! But try to avoid or stay away from those as much as possible. One thing I learned in broadcasting school (doing a lot with that degree today, lol) is to pause instead of saying “uh” or any other filler word.
- If the host asks for some information about you to prepare for the podcast, try to be as helpful as possible. Take some time and think about what people would like to know about you or your company and put some work into it. You can even suggest questions ahead of time. The host will really appreciate it and it will make his or her job easier. We ask our guests for questions so they can set the agenda. This isn’t 60 minutes.
- Prepare some things to talk about that would be of interest to the listeners. I’m not saying prepare a script but have some notes on things you can interject during the show.
- Spend some time listening to the podcast and get an idea of the host’s style before coming on. You can even mention something someone said on a previous show if it’s relevant.
- Make sure you have an audio setup that’s up to the podcast’s standards. On our podcast we don’t ask much. Just that the interviewee has an external mic and a headset. Even airpods will work. And they must use a computer because of the platform we use.
- Refer to the host by name a few times. It will help the rapport with the host and make the podcast better.
- And don’t be afraid to plug your company. Pretty much everyone in the podcasting space (including myself) gets great business benefits from doing a podcast. We expect our guests to benefit as well.
- Finally, have fun! If you have fun everyone else will too.
