You Shouldn’t Try to Sell Your Website, IF…

Some people are ready to retire and want to move on with their lives.

Some are working on another project, often outside of adult and want to concentrate on the new project. And some who are working on a new project need the money from a sale of their site to invest in the new project.

Unfortunately, I’ve run into some people who are ill and can no longer work on their sites.

I’ve had sellers whose significant other doesn’t know what they do and want to get out of adult to save the relationship. Or sometimes they know what they do, don’t like it, and tell the owner to sell or else.

Some sellers are just tired of the adult industry and ready to move on.

These are just some of the reasons. Trust me, there are more. And if there are reasons you should sell your site, there are also reasons not to sell your site.

I often hear from people who just started a project and have decided to bail on it before it has the chance to make money. In fact, I heard from someone like that today. And two days ago, as a matter of fact.

That’s a really bad idea. First, if the site isn’t making money, then it won’t be worth much to potential buyers. Very, very little, if you can find a buyer at all. We generally don’t take on sites like that for that very reason.

What if you have a site that’s growing, but again, it’s fairly new? Assuming the growth projection is showing continued growth, why would you sell it now?

Here’s an example in dollars and cents. Let’s say you have a site that has made 100,000 dollars in profit and is one year old. You’re seeing month over month increases in sales and profits. The most you could possibly sell the site for today is 400,000 dollars. Probably less in fact, depending on the niche. And let’s say in year two it makes 300,000 dollars. Now you can get over a million dollars for the site. Isn’t it worth waiting a year for that?

Again, maybe some of the factors at the top of the article apply. In that case you may have little choice.

Here’s another scenario. You’ve had a site for years and it’s been doing well until just recently. In the last year sales have tanked. The reason is that you’ve stopped working on the site. (This is something I see all the time, by the way.) If this happens, it doesn’t make sense to sell it now. You either should have sold it before you stopped paying attention to the business, or you should start putting effort in again before trying to sell it, hoping to build things back up.

My best advice is to be very careful as to how you time a sale. Don’t sell too early or too late.
