Aubrey Kate Discusses 'I Am Aubrey' Docu-Showcase From Evil Angel

LOS ANGELES — The morning after she nabbed her unprecedented third AVN Award for Trans Performer of the Year, Aubrey Kate awoke in her New York City apartment and stared at the ceiling. “What’s next?” she thought to herself. A better question may have been, “What’s left?” The top trans performer in history, Kate recently ordered a glass-encased shelf to house all of her trophies, including 12 from AVN alone. She was the first trans performer to appear on the cover of AVN Magazine and the first trans contract girl for Evil Angel. With nearly 1 million social media followers, Kate has residences in Las Vegas and Manhattan and drives a snazzy Mercedes G-Wagon. Life, it would appear, is good. But apparently for Kate, not good enough. As easy as it would’ve been to rest on her laurels—and maybe “cut back” a bit after her AVN triumph—Kate vowed that January morning to do just the opposite. As successful as she was in 2020, Kate promised herself this year would be even better. “I’m never satisfied,” Kate told AVN this week. “Porn to me is like a relationship. I want to hold onto it as long as I can. I want to always be better than I was the day before.” In that sense, 2021 has been like a rock concert for Kate. She continuously puts ons marvelous shows—and then returns to the stage for an encore. And then another. And another. And another. First came a highly-publicized romp with AVN Hall of Famer Ramon Nomar, who hand-picked Kate as his first-ever trans scene partner. Next was a starring role in Pure Taboo’s “The Widow” and a pair of scorching hookups with elite performers Jane Wilde and Small Hands in Succubus. Kate shot with Brazzers for the first time this spring and then landed a lead spot alongside Maitland Ward in Muse 2 for Deeper. Kate’s crowning achievement, though, is being unveiled today, when Evil Angel releases the first scene from I Am Aubrey, a biopic about Kate’s life and career. In addition to four sizzling sex scenes, the project features in-depth interviews with Kate and her colleagues along with a behind-the-scenes glimpse of Kate’s every day life. The DVD and Adult Empire VOD exclusive for I Am Aubrey will arrive on Sept. 22.  Kate is the fourth performer—joining icons Katrina Jade, Riley Reid and Angela White—to be  featured in an I Am production. The film was produced by Evil Angel’s Aiden Starr and directed by Dana Vespoli. “Aubrey is a pioneer in this industry,” Vespoli told AVN. “Everyone knows her, everyone likes her and everyone wants to be around her. There are plenty of pretty girls who can put out a good scene, but Aubrey is different. There’s a star quality about her—a charisma—that sets her apart. “She’s exactly the type of performer we’re looking for with this series.” Kate said Evil Angel executives broached the idea of the movie during a phone call in the fall of 2020. “I was so excited that I dropped my phone,” she said. “It means so much to me, because it’s not just all about porn. Porn is a big part of my life, but there’s more to me than that. It’ll be nice for fans to see everything that it takes to succeed in this (field). They’ll see that I’m not a robot. I work hard and don’t have things handed to me. “Other than winning the AVN awards, this is the highest honor I’ve ever received.” The sex scenes in I Am Aubrey include another encounter with Nomar, a blowbang in which Kate services four male performers and a threesome featuring Kate, Pierce Paris and longtime trans star Chelsea Marie. “I have as good of chemistry with Pierce as I do with anyone,” Kate said. “Chelsea has been a friend for a long time, all the way back to when I got into the industry. I’m glad I got to work with her.” One of Kate’s favorite scenes involves Ricky Larkin and stunning blonde vixen Kenzie Taylor, with the theme being that Kate and Taylor are two “real-life barbies.” Kate and Taylor have been close since winning an AVN award for their scene in Axel Braun’s 2019 award-winning parody, Captain Marvel. As strong as the sex scenes may be, the things that set I Am Aubrey apart are the snippets that capture Kate in every day life. An Evil Angel cameraman in New York accompanied Kate and her friends to the nail salon and then to lunch. She was filmed at her apartment, at airports and on a plane. Some of Kate’s favorite footage was shot on a snowy day in December of 2020. A handful of her friends flew in from various cities, and Kate rented a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van to drive them around the Big Apple, stopping at various locations such as Chinatown and Times Square so Kate—at one point wearing a neon bikini—could pose for pictures in the snow. “Then I’d hurry back into the van, where it was warm, and we’d all eat Chinese food,” Kate said. “It was a crazy day, but a fun day. And the best part was that all of my friends were there to experience it with me.” A few months later, in Los Angeles, Vespoli conducted an in-depth interview with Kate that covered her upbringing in a mainstream family, her experiences during her transition, her attraction to a career in the adult industry and the challenges of maintaining her appearance. “The days when we shot the documentary aspect were my favorite,” Vespoli said. “I got to know her better. I had an idea of who Aubrey was just from having her on set and talking to her. But this was an opportunity to really delve into her history. And also her day-to-day life. “She was really open and vulnerable and thoughtful. You didn’t see her sitting there thinking, ’What’s the right answer? What’s the right answer? What am I willing to disclose?’ She just tells you everything. She’s not shy at all.” Kate said the fact that Evil Angel is the company behind the venture makes the film even more meaningful. The company made Kate its first trans contract girl back in 2019 and continued to invite her to sign at its AVN booth even after the deal expired. Some of her best work, she said, has been with Evil Angel. “They do a lot for me,” Kate said. “And they’ve always shown me so much respect. They’ve felt like family to me since the second or third year I started porn. Hopefully they know how much they mean to me.” As excited as she is about I Am Aubrey—not to mention her scene in Muse 2, which was also released this week—Kate said she’s not taking any breaks. She’s excited about a soon-to-be-released scene from TransAngels and has three shoots with Adult Time lined up later this month.Kate said many of her recent roles have involved extensive acting, which she’s enjoyed. And she’s glad to have reached a point in her career where she can be more picky about the projects she takes on, instead of saying “yes” to every offer. “I think that’s what every performer strives for,” Kate said. “I’m in a place now where I don’t do porn for the money anymore. I do it because I love it. It’s who I am.” Kate paused and laughed. “At the end of the day,” she said, “I’m just trying to stay relevant.” For Aubrey Kate, “relevant” means nothing less than the very, very top.
