Op-Ed: Feeling Helpless? Tomorrow's the Day to Scream About It |
Who doesn't remember where they were on November 8, 2016? Why? That was the night Donald Trump was elected president of the United States, of course—despite the fact that roughly two million fewer Americans voted for him than for his main opponent. And for those who didn't vote for Trump, who doesn't remember the fear, anguish and disgust that they felt after the results came in? But even with the calls for the elimination of the Electoral College, for the U.S. House to begin impeachment proceedings against Trump for a variety of crimes he's committed, or for Trump's cabinet or "such other body as Congress may by law provide" to attempt to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office, many Americans simply feel helpless to combat the federal government's outrages, which have spilled forth continuously from the day Trump took office. Well, guess what? Tomorrow, November 8, the date of last year's election, has been set aside as the day to vent all that anguish, and to "Scream helplessly at the sky," as the Facebook event puts it. "This administration has attacked everything about what it means to be American," Johanna Schulman, a local activist in Cambridge who is working on organizing the event, told Newsweek. "Who wouldn't feel helpless every day? Coming together reminds us that we are not alone, that we are part of an enormous community of activists who are motivated and angry, whose actions can make a difference." People in at least nine cities across the country—including Los Angeles, Miami, Austin, New York City, and Chicago—are organizing demonstrations on Facebook, all titled something along the lines of "Scream Helplessly at the Sky on the Anniversary of the Election." More than 4,000 people have indicated they'll be attending their local shout fest on November 8. In New York alone, at least 2,100 are slated to get together in Washington Square Park and scream their heads off from 7 to 8 p.m. "Join us cucks and snowflakes, safe spacers and libtards, as we enjoy a collective cathartic yell into the heavens about our current political establishment," the NYC event's description reads. The Los Angeles portion of the event will be taking place 6-8 p.m. in Grand Hope Park, near South Grand Avenue and West Olympic Boulevard, and organizer Kit Winter has invited all who feel abused and helpless to "Mark the one-year anniversary of the so-called 'election' of the so-called 'President' by joining us for wailing, gnashing of teeth, rending of garments, and banging of drums. Bring a drum or a rattle if you want. Howl at the sky." Yeah, it won't solve anything ... but it sure will feel good!
