Adult Stars in 'Lord of the Freaks' Premiere Tonight in Hollywood |
HOLLYWOOD, Calif.—By all accounts, Greek billionaire Alki David is a modern-day Renaissance man. Besides owning an online TV network with 600 channels (FilmOn.com) and being the creator of Hologram USA, the company that put a hologram of the late Tupac Shakur on stage at Coachella, he's also the force behind Battlecam.com, a sort of online version of the TV show/movie franchise Jackass. "Alki started Battlecam about five years ago, after he was frustrated by the site JustinTV, which was a self-broadcasting online platform where people would make their lives into their own reality shows," explained publicist Owen Phillips, "so he created Battlecam to provide a new platform for people to express themselves, and on Battlecam.com, each user is running their own TV station essentially. "The way Battlecam works is, it has a lot of dares; there's a lot of dares between people to do a lot of outrageous and sometimes dangerous things," he continued. "Sometimes they issue them to each other; sometimes Alki kind of weighs in and suggests some outrageous things that people might do, so one guy was supposed to live in a box for 30 days with very minimal sustenance and hygiene. I think he lasted seven. One guy nailed his scrotum to a two-by-four with a staple gun; one guy who was not authorized to do this did shoot himself in the arm just to get attention on the channel, so it goes pretty far out there." And all of that action has now been collected into a documentary film, Lord of the Freaks, which not only features some of the Battlecam showdowns, but also includes a certain amount of celebrity involvement—either clips from talk shows David has hosted, or scenes of the celebs refereeing some Battlecam showdowns, or even (for example) feeding a donut to the guy who was supposed to live in the box for a month—or sometimes even Battlecamming themselves! Among the stars who appear in Lord of the Freaks, besides Alki himself, are musicians Fred Durst and Dave Navarro, actors Eric Roberts and Andy Dick, Kato Kaelin, top model/talent agent Janice Dickinson, adult stars Ron Jeremy and Sasha Grey, martial artist/stuntman/bodyguard Chuck Zito, the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, wrestler/MMA star Rampage Jackson, and actor/adult aficionado Cory Feldman, all of whom are expected to attend the star-studded Hollywood event. The movie will be premiering tonight at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, with a red carpet beginning at 6:30 and pre-show cocktails at 7 p.m., with the film beginning at 8 p.m.—but those who managed to get one of the few publicly available seats will definitely want to stay for the after-party at 9:30, where David will be premiering his latest hologram. Phillips wasn't authorized to say anything more about it, except that "it'll be kind of a startling surprise, and the audience will feel very involved in this event. It's not going to be just like watching something on a video monitor." Those who aren't able to attend tonight's premiere can still see the film since it will be simultaneously available on David's digital distribution company MondoTunes, as well as on iTunes and 600 other digital stores around the world. MondoTunes, whose main activity is serving as a platform for indie musicians and labels, is using the premiere to kick off its new service of distributing independent films.
