Dr. Chauntelle, Hustler Host 'Exposure' Book Event in Las Vegas |
LAS VEGAS—Noted sociologist and astute adult industry observer Dr. Chauntelle Tibbals will share her insights on the porn business when she hosts a pre-release event for her book Exposure: A Sociologist Explores Sex, Society, and Adult Entertainment. The event will take place 7-8 p.m. on Thursday, June 4 at Hustler Hollywood, 6007 Dean Martin Drive, Las Vegas. The program will feature Dr. Chauntelle reading excerpts from her book, set to release on July 7 by Greenleaf Book Group. There will also be a Q&A session, followed by a book signing. Advance copies of the book will be available for purchase. “I’m very much looking forward to seeing fans and book lovers who want to know more about the adult industry,” Tibbals said. “My goal in writing Exposure was to provide a compelling and fresh look at the business of adult entertainment, which demystifies some of the misconceptions and stereotypes surrounding pornography.” The Hustler Hollywood location for the pre-release event is serendipitous, given that former Larry Flynt Publications Vice President Theresa Flynt wrote the book’s foreword. In her introduction, Theresa Flynt writes, “In Exposure, Chauntelle offers fascinating insight into the adult industry’s inner workings, from film sets to business operations. She offers readers the chance to explore a mysterious world through her eyes—the eyes of an informed, sex-positive, empowered woman.” “But as interesting as her accounts are,” continues Flynt’s foreword, “I found myself drawn even more to the plight she has endured in order to be taken seriously by another peer group—researchers and academics.” The book has been racking up positive notices and pre-orders, landing it a spot atop the Amazon chart for upcoming books on “Social Science: Study of Pornography.” To pre-order the book, click here. Exposure has gained attention from academics, media, and adult industry members in recent months. UNLV’s Kathryn Hausbeck Korgan, author of The State of Sex, said readers will get a “better understanding of an often misunderstood industry and a fresh perspective (of porn).” Brian Alexander, author of America Unzipped: The Search for Sex and Satisfaction, wrote, “Dr. Chauntelle has never failed to impress me with her insight and honesty about (the adult industry).” Corinne Reczek, assistant professor, Departments of Sociology and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Ohio State University, called the book a “sociologically sound study of the porn industry.” Tibbals’ first-hand narrative squarely faces off against stereotypes about sex and adult entertainment. The author recounts humorous personal tales at her first adult industry trade convention (the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo), reflects on being an AVN Awards judge, and discusses her struggles as a scholar interested in learning more about adult entertainment. In her quest to understand the diversifying roles of gender, sexuality and sex work, Tibbals has become a prominent commentator on adult entertainment and its effects on society. From columns on Uproxx.com that examine the value of porn as art to essays on MensHealth.com that debunk myths surrounding male adult stars and her piece on porn star “bromances” for Playboy.com, she has worked to enhance understanding of unconventional communities.
