Cannibal Magnotta Gets Life for Dismemberment of Lover |
LOS ANGELES—As expected, Canadian Luka Magnotta, the so-called porn star whose real calling was to engage in twisted crimes that culminated in the 2012 murder and dismemberment of his Chinese lover, Jun Lin, has been found guilty and sentenced to life in prison. At stake in the trial was not whether Magnotta had committed the crime, which he kindly videotaped and which the prosecution used at trial, but his state of mind. His defense team argued that he was schizophrenic and unable to tell right from wrong when he committed the crime. But the jury was not sold. According to the prosecutor, "There was never a doubt the jury would find Magnotta guilty of first-degree murder." He added, "I thought we had good evidence of premeditation." Of course, Magnotta, 32, was as much a media whore as he was a premeditated killer. As IBT noted, "Gruesome details of the murder came to light when body parts began arriving at the offices of Canada's political parties. In May 2012, a package containing a severed foot was found at the headquarters of Canada's ruling Conservative party. The same day, a hand was found at a postal facility in a package addressed to the country's Liberal Party." And then there was the video, which depicted Magnotta killing Lin, cutting up the corpse and then having sex with it. As AVN has previously reported, this case came with everything, including a suspect who fled to Europe, as well as the grotesque spectacle of young women expressing support for the "Cannibal Man of Montreal." Lin's father traveled from China to Canada for the trial. Following the verdict, he commented publicly through a translator to the court, saying poignantly, "I had come to see your trial system to see justice done and I leave satisfied that you have not let my son down." He also added, "I had come to see remorse, to hear some form of apology, and I leave without anything." Magnotta will have the rest of his life to sit and think about that one.
