Governor Brown Signs âRevenge Pornâ Bill Into Law |
SACRAMENTO, Calif.—Engaging in so-called “revenge porn” is now illegal in California. Governor Jerry Brown signed the bill outlawing the behavior into law Tuesday along with 35 other pieces of legislation, according to the Los Angeles Times. "Until now, there was no tool for law enforcement to protect victims," said Sen. Anthony Cannella (R-Ceres), who introduced the legislation. "Too many have had their lives upended because of an action of another that they trusted." Under SB 255, which takes effect immediately, individuals convicted of illegally distributing private images with the intent to harass or annoy another face up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000. More information about SB 255, including text of the various versions, can be found here.
