2013 XRCO Award Winners Announced to Full, Raucous House |
HOLLYWOOD—The X-Rated Critics Organization (XRCO) held its 29th annual awards ceremony Thursday night at Supperclub LA, a brand new venue for the event. The 2013 XRCO Awards Show was hosted by adult megastar Misty Stone and XRCO/AVN Hall of Famer Ed Powers, with starlets Lilly Evans and Maddy O'Reilly serving as the traditional "Heart-On Girls" in charge of conferring the guild's heart-shaped trophies to their winners. Prior to the commencement of the ceremony itself, another AVN Hall of Famer, performer-cum-comedienne Rebecca Bardoux, took the stage to regale the barely aware audience with her newly hatched stand-up stylings. The commotion continued as the official festivities got underway, despite Stone's attempt to bring the crowd to order by barking into the mic, "I need everyone to take their seats as soon as possible, because I'm on the microphone, you dig?!" The first order of business was to bring William "The Bear" Margold to the stand to oversee the induction of the 2013 Hall of Fame classmembers. He too tried to quiet the crowd, but with a more blunt approach, shouting, "Shut the fuck up!" Getting little compliance, he charged on with some memorials, half-cracking, "We had a pretty good year in the industry, because we only lost three legends." Those, he said, were cinematographer/director Jane Waters, director/actor Fred J. Lincoln and the man Margold called "one of the four faces on the Mount Rushmore of porn," Harry Reems. A few minutes later—after Kendall Karson accepted the first Hall of Fame trophy on behalf of Lisa Ann—Margold confessed that he'd been reminded of a fourth legend who'd passed in the previous year, photographer J. Stephen Hicks. Next Brandy Aniston took the stage to present Rodney Moore his Hall of Fame trophy. Moore briefly recounted shooting his first scene three days before Christmas in 1991, saying his talent had to inform him he needed to secure releases from them if he intended to sell the movie. He went on to make his thank yous, including a special one to XRCO chairman Dirty Bob, who he said coined the signature Rodney Moore catchphrase "I survived a Rodney Blast." The third Hall of Fame induction was presented by director Luc Wylder to his wife Alexandra Silk, who last year did the honors for him. She was decked out in a completely see-through black mesh dress with no bra or panties on underneath. In her typically bubbly manner, she said, "This means a lot to me, guys, because it's just family here. It's been an honor to work with and love and fuck all of you." Jonathan Morgan received his induction next, and had a long list of people to thank, including Jim Enright, Serenity, Stormy Daniels, Lisa Ann, Randy Spears, Evan Stone, Jake Jacobs, Andre Madness, Scott Preston, Brad Armstrong and Steve Orenstein. Before the following induction, Margold made yet another effort to pipe the crowd down, saying, "I want you to pay attention, and so far you have not done a very good job." He then made the presentation to John Stagliano for his landmark film The Fashionistas. Stagliano, in his trademark aw-shucks fashion, remarked, "Fashionistas was an interesting movie. I sold a lot of them. I managed to blow all my money on a dance show in Vegas, and it was worth it. I had the fortune to work with Belladonna when she was brand new, and Manuel Ferrara, who did a very good job of mouthing all the English words in the movie." Finally, Stagliano's right-hand man, Christian Mann, had his trophy accepted by Paul Fishbein, who said Mann was unable to attend because "he's in the midst of a very big battle that he is going to win [referring to Mann's current cancer fight]. He's one of my very best friends for my 30 years in this business, and he will win this battle that he was told he had no chance to." In closing that portion of the show, Margold signed off with the revelation that for next year's 30th anniversary XRCO Awards, Ron Jeremy will be serving as the lone host. From there, the show moved along at a brisk pace. Aside from there being a good number of absentees among the winners' circle, those who were on hand to accept their awards kept their speeches exceptionally brief. The aforementioned Ferrara got off a couple of the night's best lines: upon winning Best Gonzo Series for his verité Evil Angel critics' darling Raw, he mused, "Doesn't by law this mic should have a condom?" and when he returned to the podium to collect the Male Performer of the Year trophy, he jabbed, "There is one person I could not do it without, and that's Keiran Lee's mother." A more poignant, though still upbeat, thank you came from MILF of the Year winner Veronica Avluv, who paid respects to her recently departed husband Hans Avluv in her speech. "Wow, this is a great honor," she said. "I wish Hans was here to see this, but I love you guys, I love this industry, and thank you so much." Serial winner Axel Braun did not see any lull in his streak, to say the least, nearly sweeping the parody categories by scooping up Best Parody (Comedy) for his Star Wars XXX: A Porn Parody, Best Parody (Comic) for his Superman vs. Spider-Man: An Axel Braun Parody and Best Director (Parody). The lone remaining slot in the arena, as a matter of fact—Best Parody (Drama)—had to be shared by two contenders, in a rare tie between Adam & Eve Pictures' Dallas XXX: A Parody and Smash Pictures' Diary of Love (for neither of which anybody came forth to accept). Due to his notorious stage fright, porn It boy James Deen purportedly had to be conned into going onstage to accept the Mainstream Adult Media Favorite award. Walking out and pulling show organizer Mike Moz by the arm behind him, Deen announced, "I would just like to say that Mike Moz tricked me into coming onstage. He said he had a media favor he needed me to do, and that's why I dragged him onstage." John Stagliano saw vindication from the near shutout his magnum opus Voracious: The First Season received at this year's AVN Awards by taking home the Best Epic honor for the work. "I have to thank the critics for putting my movie in a different category from Wasteland," he semi-joked in reference to Elegant Angel Productions' awards-festooned feature. "I was getting a little pissed." Meanwhile, the star of Voracious, Brooklyn Lee, walked away double fisting trophies for the distinctions of Orgasmic Oralist and Superslut. For the first, she slunk onto the stage like a lounge singer climbing onto a grand piano and simply proclaimed, "Yay! Awesome!" Her second speech was slightly more prolonged: "Keiran [Lee] says he co-signs. And thank you XRCO. I'm gonna go. Bye." Another performer who scored her own pair of Heart-Ons (though she was not present to pick up either) was Lily Carter, being crowned Cream Dream and Best Actress, the latter for her work in Wasteland. That was just one of the categories in which Graham Travis' masterpiece repeated the wins it collected at the AVN Awards; Travis also took Best Director (Features) and the movie received the grand prize of the evening, Best Release. As Travis was yet another no-show, former Elegant contract director William H. accepted both awards on his behalf. H. himself was bestowed the honor of Best Director (Non-Features), and took the opportunity to show gratitude to his new employer, Jules Jordan Video, saying, "I'd like to thank Jules Jordan for giving me a job and allowing me to continue doing what I love to do." To bring the proceedings to an end, Powers trumpeted, "All of you in the industry have heard this before: It's a wrap! Now let's party!" And that everybody did, spreading out in the cavernous club and imbibing the night away merrily as pounding dance music filled the air. The event was sponsored by Vivid Entertainment, Wicked Pictures, IAFD.com, Evil Angel, X-Play and its new parody Not The Wizard of Oz XXX, Adam & Eve Pictures, Axel Braun Productions and Pipeline Multimedia.
