'Deep Throat' Public Screening Pulled in Perth |
PERTH, Australia—The pussies in Perth have decided to cancel the scheduled Dec. 8 public screening of the original Deep Throat at the Rooftop Cinemas. The stated reason has to do with four complaints that came in, but the management of the theater also said only eight tickets had been sold. Not huge numbers either way, but enough apparently to get Deep Throat replaced with The Goonies and Monkey Magic. The complaints, according to management, were "not mindless rants, they were well considered critiques" that addressed the "the gender politics of the film," reported the Sydney Morning Herald, which added, "Deep Throat made Linda Lovelace porn royalty, but later in life she claimed that anyone who watched the film was watching her being raped because her husband/manager Chuck Traynor had forced her, at gunpoint, to take part." Had the paper or the theater management dug a little deeper, however, they would have learned that Lovelace's version of events may not have been what actually happened on set, assuming, that is, that the controversy over her experience on the film is what was meant by "gender politics," and that their original intention to screen the film as "a bit of audience education" made sense. At any rate, let's hope no one shows up on the 8th expecting to see Deep Throat, because The Goonies won't quite cut the mustard.
